System Requirements
Geneious Server is an enterprise software package that requires you to own hardware that meets significant specifications. Geneious Server can run in two basic configurations:
- Execute Host – a stand-alone self-contained server that does the scheduling of jobs and the computation.
- Submit Host – connected to a cluster or other HPC facility that does the scheduling of jobs on the cluster.
Geneious Server as an Execute Host
When using Geneious Server as an Execute Host, the amount of RAM you need will be proportional to the intensity of the analyses you're doing. For mapping or reference assembly even of whole human genomes, you may need no more than 48 GB of RAM. However, if you are doing de novo assemblies of any genomes larger than fungi, you should invest in significantly more RAM.Example systems
For de novo assembly of small to medium-sized genomes using Geneious Server as an Execute Host we recommend:PowerEdge T710 – Small to medium-sized genomes – 2x6-core Intel Xeon Westmere with 2 TB HDD and 48 – 192 GB of RAM
For de novo assembly of medium to large-sized genomes using Geneious Server as an Execute Host we recommend:
PowerEdge R810 – Medium to large-sized genomes – 4x-6-core Intel Nehalem with 2 TB HDD and 48 GB – 512 GB of RAM
Geneious Server as a Submit Host
When using Geneious Server as a Submit Host, the memory requirements are not as substantial as when running as an Execute Host, because the computation is done on the cluster or HPC resource. However we recommend at least 24 GB of RAM in any system to ensure stability. The nodes on your cluster must be appropriately spec'ed to handle the types of job you're intending to do.Example systems
- PowerEdge T710 – 2x6-core Intel Xeon Westmere with 2 TB HDD and 24 – 48 GB of RAM
- PowerEdge R810 – 4x-6-core Intel Nehalem with 2 TB HDD and 24 – 48 GB of RAM
