AUCKLAND, NZ – August 28, 2018. Biomatters today announces that Geneious, its world-leading desktop suite of molecular biology and sequence analysis tools, will be renamed to Geneious Prime.
Geneious began as a way to reduce time spent on managing and analyzing biological data and is now widely used in biotechnology and academic research. Over half a million scientists have used Geneious in the 13 years since its first release. In the last two years Geneious has doubled the size of its customer base in commercial biotech and pharma, particularly driven by customers working in biologic drug development.
President and CEO Brett Ammundsen commented “Over the last decade our customers have associated Geneious with trust, expertise and approachability. As we continue to grow and adapt to the market, that same Geneious experience has to encompass a wider range of solutions for customers who have been with us for years, as well as new customers. The time has come to give our desktop software its own identity.”

Why rename?
Geneious means more than just one product. It represents a high quality customer experience that applies to other software solutions, such as Geneious Biologics. We had to give Geneious Prime its own identity so the name Geneious would be free to encompass a whole brand rather than a single tool.
Is the software still the same?
Yes, the new Geneious Prime name will not affect the software’s functionality. We are still dedicated to developing and improving the software. The name Geneious Prime will start appearing in recent releases.
What will happen to my data?
Nothing. The name change does not affect your work.
Do I need a new license for Geneious Prime?
No, your current licenses will still continue to work in your existing software and the new Genious Prime branded software.
What is Geneious Prime 2019?
We are changing the way we refer to the new versions of Geneious and the upcoming release will be called Geneious Prime 2019 instead of Geneious R12. This will make it easier for you to know that you are on the latest version.
Will the website change?
Geneious.com will be changing to more accurately represent the overarching Geneious brand. You will still be able to download all versions of Geneious Prime, read tutorials, and explore the knowledge base just as before.

Geneious is a high quality customer experience and represents expertise, friendliness and the ability to deliver practical solutions.

Prime expresses a high standard, and the top choice for scientists around the world. We also liked that it referenced being the first, as this was the first tool we released over 10 years ago.
